ABOUT OFUOBI
Ofuobi Prestigious Social Club of Calgary is an association of members who share the same common interests, and strive towards achieving common goals. The social club is legally accredited, and registered with the government of Alberta, and also, is vested with rights and responsibilities that come with a registered social club in Alberta, Canada. The word “Ofuobi” literally means “one mind”, “one heart” and “one spirit”, a name that is grounded in the culture of Igbo people in Nigeria, and as such, demands that members share the same cultural values.
Being consciously aware of the dangers of losing our cultural values and ways of life while living in a foreign land where members of the social club called a second home, the members strive to promote and aspire towards cultural adaptation for our families, while holding on to the core values of Igbo culture.
The concepts of brotherly love, togetherness, and commitment to the task of being our brother’s keeper, are fundamental and foundational to the philosophy of the social club. The guiding principles of the social club is anchored in absolute trust, a motivation to do things differently, and a unique perspective and attitude that is shared by all the members of Ofuobi Prestigious social club of Calgary. The mindset of absolute trust is the rationale why individuals applying to become members of the social club are accepted after rigorous discernment, scrupulous examination, and thoughtful deliberations among members of the club.
Family is our greatest asset, and membership extends to include the members wives and children. Interacting and relating with our different families are vitally important to us. Through our family relationship, our cultural values and worldviews are promoted, and as well preserved, as we experience the promises and the challenges of living in this beautiful country of Canada.
After family, work is next. The members of the social club are hardworking Nigerian-Canadians, who believe in making honest livings through hard work, strategic planning and thoughtful/calculated investments. Members provide each other with supports, opportunities, and resources to achieve their optimal potentials. The support we provide to each other is not limited to when members are live. The support extends to include that members and their families are taken care of, in accordance with the constitution, in the event of unforeseen circumstances like death, in line with our core Igbo cultural belief that an Igbo child should not be buried in the foreign land.
Ofuobi Prestigious Social Club of Calgary is an integral part, and a proud supporter of the community where we live in Canada, and in Igboland. Being fully aware of the fact that social issues like hunger and homelessness, can be complex, and is also, shared responsibilities of all citizens and government, the club strive to make significant impact in alleviating social problems in our community.
The Social Club constitution is the heartbeat of the club that serves as a guide, and dictates our actions. Every member is obliged to follow the constitution and as well, is mandated to be custodians of the constitution. Discretion and thoughtful deliberations are used especially, but not exclusively, when an issue is not addressed in the constitution. Lastly, Ofuobi Prestigious Club leadership is anchored in servant leadership model, where members in leadership positions must lead by serving others first, and then proceed to lead. This philosophy is grounded in the biblical statement that “whoever wants to be great among you, must be your servant” (Mtt. 20:26).
